Man Convicted After Talking About 'Burning Bush'
Bartender Says He Overheard Man Threatening President
Posted: 12:10 p.m. EDT September 6, 2002

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Threatening the president of the United States is no laughing matter.

Richard Humphreys is learning that lesson the hard way. A federal jury in South Dakota has found Humphreys guilty of threatening to kill or harm the president.

Humphreys had argued his comment about a "burning Bush" was both a joke and a prophecy -- and that the First Amendment protected his right to utter those words. He was in Sioux Falls in March, on a day that President George W. Bush was visiting.

A bartender said he overheard Humphreys talking about a "burning Bush" and the possibility of someone pouring a flammable liquid on the president.

Humphreys faces a maximum of five years in prison
Remind me to NOT go drinking in South Dakota.

Perhaps if Bush could get away with it he'd edit away the part about the Burning Bush encountered by Moses in the Old Testament, too.

I suppose the bartender was only doing what he though was the 'right' thing. I would assume that alot of Americans have taken a pro-active stance on preventing violent attacks since 'September 11th'. But facing 5 years in prison for bar-room boasts? I think that is excessive. Let's hope the judge listens to reason on this one.

Though I believe that it was the Kennedy assassination that really put teeth into it. So what is new about this story? not a thing. The threats against life of the leader of the nation is not something lawenforcement should or will take lightly and I for one like it that way. Obviously this boob was either too stupid or too ignorant to think that no one would take exception to him making threats. I said it before, don't take actiosn if you cant face the consequences...and speaking threats is an action. (I would even say the same if it had been Clinton he was threatening)

Oh KT, Im pretty sure if the guy had been talking about the bible, that the Bartender would not have reported a threat against the president. The claim "oh I was just talking about the bible" sounds like a typical after the fact lawyer claim. Of course there are some far left liberals here who would make any mention of the bible in public illegal too though.

• In 1996, he was arrested for trespassing in a synagogue. He had a letter that stated he wanted to visit President Clinton. In an interview, Humphreys told a Secret Service agent he wanted to discuss his religious persecution with the president.

• In July 1998, Humphreys was arrested for impersonating a police officer. He told investigators that President Clinton and the first lady would commit suicide because the world was coming to an end.

• Also in July 1998, he contacted police and told them of an alleged assassination plot against Clinton.

• In September 1998, Humphreys wrote a letter to the U.S. attorney in Orlando, Fla., telling him of further threats against Clinton, as well as assassination plots against the pope and other public figures.

Five years in the slammer should cure him!

How do you know? Are you the bartender? [/QUOTE] Nope, I just know that a "average" guy behind a bar hears people bitching and moaning all day long, it would not make sense for him to report just another drunk. It was an opinion that I voiced in any case so I don't need to justify it with a detailed analysis of the bartender. And while Im thinking of it, if you keep rolling your eyes like that you are going to need glasses, and also run the risk of being offensive to the people you are doing it to, and Im sure you would not want to purposely offend say...me for example?
