I'm a little bit disapointed about this game. First of all, this game is not a fantasy role-playing game. Its sounds like diablo, mostly a hack&slash. No NPC interaction like BG, no party ambiance like in BG. 3rd editon sounds powerplay.

The game that came with NWN is not all there is to NWN. People are working on modules by the dozens, some of which will be pure hack and slash, some are persistent worlds like EQ, AC, and others will be strong role playing modules. I'm really looking forward to some of these becoming available in the next few months.

I agree that the main campaign is lacking in certain ways. The plot is fairly contrived. The amount of treasure available is too much, by two or three times. Certain areas of the game seem rushed (for example, chapter 3 on...) However, overall it's pretty good. If you're still in chapter 1, keep going. Chapter 2 is the strongest part of the game. Chapter 3 is good as well. If you love the party atmosphere, then the single player version of NWN is not for you. Try to find a group of friends and play multi-player. It should beat any single player party game hands down.

Neverwinter Nights is a multiplayer game with a singleplayer campaign that's designed to teach newbies the basics of 3rd edition and allow them to make a character and completely screw up its feats and skills before starting multiplayer.

Baldur's Gate was a single-player game with a multiplayer option.

You can't really compare them.
