Simple really, I'll post it here in case there are any others out there who don't know.

-Hide in shadows
-get behind enemy
-attack successfully (i.e. hit the enemy)
-enemy gets damaged with backstab damage modifier
-have a nice day

Firestormalpha you did a good job, but I would just like to add one thing:

Make sure you are using a weapon normal thiefs can use (not sure about the backstabbing ranger kit weapons, but those might work for that kit).
This includes longswords, shortswords, clubs, daggers, scimitars, katanas. I think that's it. I think dualed or multiclassed theifs can use weapons like two handed swords, they can't backstab with them. Gee I hope I got this right.

Good luck!

You need either a dagger, short sword or long sword. Imagine a 90 degree arc behind the target - Thats where you need to be. Only thieves (or assassins or bounty hunters - but not swashbucklers) or stalkers can do it (not vanilla rangers or archers).

Actually Dirty Meg, any close combat weapon that a theif can use works just fine (yeah, strangely enough that means blunt weapons as well)

However if you are playing a PnP game, the rules could be whatever the DM decides (in most cases logic, the bladed weapons you mentioned, would win out)
