Multiclassing in IWD2 (which uses 3rd Edition AD&D rules) is NOT like multiclassing in the old 2nd edition rules. WITH A FEW EXCEPTIONS, one can freely go back and forth between various classes. In fact, if you are using classes which are NOT favored classes of the race in questions - switching back in forth repeatedly is necessary to avoid XP penalties.

On the subject of "favoured class".

Is it only a feature if u are multiclassing? If for example, one uses a H/Orc Barb, are there any benefits say over a human one.

The main advantage to starting one race over another is that you can bump a starting stat up to 20. For instance, H/O's get a +2 to strength. You can add 8 points to that and have it at 20. Halflings get a +2 DEX, so you could start a Halfling with DEX 20.

Favored class only applies if you take on a second or third profession. For a character with only one class, the "favored class" is not considered at all.

Favored class just won't count when you look at whether or not a multi classed character gets an Exp penalty - no other benefits.

The only characters I know of that have problems switching to a class, and then back to what they were, are Monks and Paladins. When you make one, the order you choose will tell you what you're allowed to switch to if you want to switch back.

Actually, "switching" is really not the right way to put it. The abilities of both (or all) classes are available at all times. For instance, as a fighter/rogue, you have access to all fighter abilities and all rogue abilities at the same time.

Development might be a better way of putting things.

Well you switch your "current" class; but yeah, you always have all the abilities of all your classes (well, almost always, the Monk unarmed BAB can get messed up, and skills from the old class may become cross-class with the new one).
