Is it possible to change the graphics resolution by editing the config file, like in BG 2?

Do you have HoW installed? If you do then there is an option there in it's config program to be able to adjust the graphics resolution. Just run the configuration program and take a look for it.
If you don't have HoW installed however, then you're not going to have the other resolutions available to you. You'll just be stuck with the one.

Too bad I dont have HoW...
But well, I guess I'm gonna have to live with it - just a bit annoying to play 640x480 on a 21" monitor. Thanks anyway

There are a ton of reasons to get Heart of Winter if you don't have it already. More gaming, more spells and items, the improved graphics, scroll cases, gem bags, potion pouches, experience cap is removed so your characters can go to level 30, I could go on and on.
Look around and you can probably find it for around $15, then if you've got a decent connection you can download the trials of the Loremaster add on, which is free and works with the Heart of Winter add on. More than worth it, and I can't recomend it enough.

Carthiriel,
Welcome, again. Nice to see you making yourself at home! SirWillow is serving up the straight scoop: Virtually everything that matters about the game, including available resolution, game controls, game balance (e.g., MUCH more capable bards and druids), treasure highlighting, and other features too numerous to mention are implemented by HoW. (Don't even think of playing a bard or druid without this upgrade, unless you are into masochism.) You can see other threads for details; but to sum it up: It is worth buying the IWD:HoW collection, even if you end up with an extra copy of IWD, just to get the HoW overlay! I haven't even entered the HoW areas, yet; but have immensely enjoyed the features HoW adds. Speaking as someone who has played both ways, I can confidently say that, "You'll enjoy IWD without HoW; but if you ever get HoW; you'll kick yourself for being so patient." Party On!
