EU investigates mystery buggings

European Union officials have launched an investigation after bugging devices were found at offices used by several delegations - including those of France, Germany and the UK.

Extra security measures have been adopted ahead of a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels on Thursday and Friday.

The discovery of the telephone tapping systems was first reported on Wednesday by France's Le Figaro newspaper, which blamed the US.

But EU spokesman Dominique-Georges Marro said it was "impossible at this stage" to determine who had planted the devices.

A spokesman at the UK mission to the EU said the discovery was a matter of "considerable concern".

The telephone tapping comes at a time of heightened tensions within the EU - which is deeply divided over Iraq - and of worsening relations between the US and EU members France and Germany.

The EU spokesman said the wiretapping had been discovered during a routine inspection.

The other delegations affected have not been named, but Mr Marro said only a small number of lines had been affected.

Investigators from the affected countries were looking into the phone tapping, along with the EU's own security services, officials said.

The Justus Lipsius building, where the bugging devices were found, is a regular meeting place for EU ministers.

It houses the secretariat of the EU Council of Ministers. The bloc's foreign ministers have been meeting there this week.

The building also houses the offices of the EU's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana.

Well, it's a mystery to me!

Quite a few nations would be interested in what might be found from such things, most likely. Who doesn't want to know things they aren't supposed to? I'll be interested to see what they actually find, though.

Isnt it obvious who is behind all this? These devices were extremely advanced, very few intelligence agencies in the world have acces to these things (they were made it the US).

So, its clear the C.I.A (Chocian Intelligence Agency) is behind all this
Fortunatly, they only found the bugs, and missed the actual mind control devices..

I would also hazard I guess on hi-tech freelancers, who are all to willing to sell such information. The CIA launching a direct operation against EU is a bit dodgy given current tensions.

I've been told the bugs were planted several years ago, when the buildings were first constructed (1995-methinks). Although I don't know much about the policy of Intelligence Agency's, I doubt the real CIA would try such a thing

Why not? If I recall correctly, we did the same thing to the Russian embassy in the US several years back, and then had the nerve to complain that the Russians were doing the same thing to us in their country (talk about being hypocritical).

If it were only Germany and France who had been bugged, I'd agree it was CIA. But why bug the UK office?

They've apparently been there for many years.

Like I said. I'm no specialist. But why risk a diplomatic diseaster, with so little to gain?
