Mel .... there are just so many levels to read into your replies ..... I'm not gonna touch em with a ten foot ..... well

Groj ... now I can't get the image of lil white bunnies hopping around your computer room. I never pictured you as a Bunny Rancher .... do you own a purple fur covered fidora?

And since this thread is about protesters .... man can't they do it with out blocking traffic? Some people have to get to work .....

Touche' !!

However, it only *sounds* like you've made the following point: wine bashing (supported by many of us pro-war folks) and McD's vandalism (derided by us same folks) are akin and we can't have it both ways. Untrue, I say!

The wine bashers owned their wine - it was theirs to destroy. No crime. And, they *supported* the French economy by *buying* it, to point a fine point on it.

The McD's vandalizers were abusing someone else's property - which is illegal and immoral.

*You* are on the "any violence toward property is violence in demonstration" side, the only side where the connection between the two holds any merit. I am on the "only violence against property of another is violence in demonstration" side, and the connection between the two does not affect my points.

So, in short the connection between the two undermines your argument but not undermine mine. Sorry. Heck of a good try though.

I know Timber ; what you said is exactly why I didn't want to make that link myself
I didnt try to make a point though, I was just teasing you nicely

However, if you look a bit further, pourring wine was maybe a symbolic event for you, but for me it was just the will to destroy something because of what it represents (wine = french culture/people and absolutely not Chirac and his governement). Worst of all it was planned and organized.

On the other hand, at every protests you have the same kind of guys who will always break stuff. You can't control that. This time they thought it would be clever and more acceptable to aim a MacDonalds. They were just young retarded brainless people.

So yeah, in fact there is no link between these 2 events. Thx for pointing it my dear Timber

Wait... that's not... but if.... ARRRGGGGHHH!!!! *bangs head on desk*

Okay, my final point Masklinn is that if you look intelligently at the situation you will.... Pfffffttttt!!!!!

That's the best I can state my point at this point regarding your points on the other point.

Ok, so now I'm seeing evil bunnies hanging out at kinky burger joints, demanding wine and burgers and asking for clarification of traffic jams on right or left points while watching a nice dutch boy laugh at a dyke in France. Oh you people are starting to scare me!

Ummm...think I'll just go find a cold soda and watch the clouds roll by....I'm so confused!

Damn, this is a tough room...lol.

Not to be too technical, Masklinn, but if I use wine for it's intended purpose, I'm doing what you're complaining about, too. If I drink wine, the human digestive process will destroy the wine, ensuring that the remains end up in the sewer system. So if I buy and drink French wine, I'm actually destroying a representation of French culture and people according to your rules of engagement.

On a serious note, Masklinn, you say what the symbolic protest meant to you, but that wasn't what people protesting were saying at all. There are people that say the peace protestors are pro-Saddam, but that isn't true is it? Of course not, but that doesn't mean that's not how some people see it. Should the anti-war protestors stop protesting because some people believe the protest means something that it doesn't mean at all?

In other words, you think the wine protest means something that it does not mean, so you are offended by some perceived insult that is not intended.

EDIT - For further clarification...
Masklinn, I get the impression you think that American streets are flowing with French wine. It's just not the case. I saw a couple of instances reported and it's been weeks ago. I defend it because I think it's as valid a form of peaceful protest as any I've seen, but it's just not sweeping the nation as part of a "death to the French" frenzy.

We are starting to scare YOU?!?!?!

LOL@Cloudy! I don't think you are confuzzled enough yet. Maybe we need to add some pygmies, beavers, and falling trees. Oh, and orangutans ... with bannanas. But they can't be European bannanas for they fail to meet the specifications of the newly formed Simmean Trade Dynasty (STD). They are too short and have a tendancy to have unwanted curves to them. STD has decided to promote the proliferation of longer, thicker, stiffer bannanas.

And this just in ... the world's beavers have decided to organized a protest. They are going to travel to Iraq to act as beaver shields. No man would ever want to bomb into oblivian all of the world's cute furry beavers ....

AN EDIT on my earlier post, my image of Groj's comuter room has morphed to tiger stripped bunnies hopping around. And I'm still wondering about the purple furred fidora ...

What in the HALE (in proper John D. Fashion) are you talking about? I thought we were discussing French Bashing! Now you are talking about kinky things with bunnies and beavers... I need another margarita! Maybe then you all will make sense!

edit: John D. you Ole Crusty Alabamean Redneck Coot! Your rubbing off on me with that "HALE" thing!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaarrggh (©TimberLoftis).

I give up, but I won't change my mind about it : it was an insult toward french ppl/culture. It was meant to be exactly what it was meaning to be meaning, for real, trust me.
It did work too...look at me...how sad I am and how my argument s*cks now.

--- Let's be serious for a minute ---

Destroying goods is not a peaceful way of protesting, it's full of hate. Period.
Pourring wine is exactly the same as giving France a big finger.

And before you add it : Yes, I can fully understand that the position of France about this war may have been seen and lived by US citizens as a big finger too.

---

And now gimme a friendly hug, I need it
