I don't mind some of Benjamin Britten, and speaking of Glass, have you heard Glassworks?. Crazy.

I listen to a fair bit of Indian classical music and Qawaali, and also find Gamalan(sp?) intriguing. Do you know much about these? I'm always interested in learning more as my musical childhood was quite western.

My favorites are Symphonic Motion picture scores, many pc game soundtracks and Classical. Far, far too many to make a list with the amount of time I have to paruse the board.

I like the song "Only Time" by some woman (forgot the name). I also like Handel's "Messiah".

I thought The Rite of Spring was a bit too grim for my liking... Much prefer The Firebird -- particularly the original unabridged 1910 version, which is up to 45 minutes long.

Heard of Glass, but never got to hear any of his works -- call me uncultured...

I love Indian classical music, too -- especially the sitar. The sounds made by this instrument are just unearthly. And yes, I know the Gamelan, too. Fascinating instrument -- or set of instruments rather. It's really a large set of bamboo frames, each of which is held in the hand by certain struts and shaken to produce the sounds. It's Indonesian in origin (I think) and used in some contemporary Japanese music today, and Debussy knew about it, too. (His La Mer and Nocturnes are just great.)

Don't tell me I'm the only one around here who appreciates Richard Strauss?

Philip Glass is a bit hard to get into, no culture lacking on your part there. I'd have a listen to the Kundun soundtrack first as an intro. He likes minimalism and as a result his ideas are often amazing but the resultant sound can be disturbing ... not everyone's cup of tea, but I like it.

I thought he might be hard to get into, actually. He's supposed to be one of those avant-garde types if I remember correctly.

Listened to some Charles Ives before. I think he's just mad.

Charles Ives? I've never heard of him. Where's a good place to start?

Do you like John Cage?
