Donut mentioned Soap Operas in another thread, and a question immediately came to mind. Why are they called Soap Operas anyway?

Because most of the actors on the show should soap their mouths after reading those horrible lines anyway.

LOL!!
Soap - because the old soaps used to have commercials of washing liquids and soaps in between because so many housewifes watched those shows.
Operas - because they're equally dramatic, I guess.

I am more confused by the term, "Soap" actually. The "Opera" part I can understand. So that is it? That was how the term was coined? All because of several soap commercials? Wow... I am kinda disappointed actually. I was expecting some other exotic explanation. [img]tongue.gif[/img]

I seem to recall having read somewhere that it was the Soap commercials..laundry soap, dish soap. hand soap....I think Mel is right.

It's all down to to fact that soap powder manufacturers orginally sponsored them. Kinda prosaic I know, but that's what dictionary.com tells me
