I've seen somewhere that it's possible to have your familars pick pocket, and to retreive your items from them you talk to them and select an option that says "give me what you have on you", and just as well I know that a couple of the familiars have a high pick pocket like the cat and the ferret (like it shows you when you read up about their stats). But, I am yet to discover how to steal with a familar. Just how is it done?

Take your familiar out of your backpack and select them. Some of them have the thieving icon in their abilities bar. Then you do it just like a normal thief would.

Why have a familiar anyways? they have so low hp and once they die you loose a point of contitution bad trade imo.

I don't use them as front line tanks by the way, 95% of the time they are in my backpack where it is safe. Might not be much for a berserker(or kensai or fighter or whatever)/mage, but if you are a pure class mage the extra hitpoints can be HELPFUL. Besides, they add more depth to the game for mage players. You have everything to gain by summoning a familiar unless you use them "inappropriately" or as your tanks!
