Why does he need to be destroyed in lich form before he becomes the floating demi-lich?

Is his lich form like some sort of protection surrounding his demi-lichness that you have to get rid of before you can kill him?

First part of this business: a tag warning of minor spoilers would be nice. Some people have no desire whatever to know big K even exists; thus, we are better off warning that they may be spoiled.

And now to the business proper.

Kangaxx is himself truly a demilich. His lich form was a sort of a prison for him. The dudes you got his body parts from sealed him in lich form and broke it into pieces to ensure he could never be revived, but you essentially screwed up their plans unless, of course, you beat him, which you no doubt have accomplished.(wow mega-run-on) But anyways when you reassembled him, you opened the door to his full release. When you killed his lich form, you released him into his full dark glory of demi-lichism. Had you not succeeded in defeating the demi-lich he would have no doubt slaughtered or enslaved much of the world. That is, of course, after he burried you in the center of Faerun. Fun. huh?

P.S.-If I have forgoten any info, or misrepresented any info please feel free to make corrections.
