Monitor may be done, or could it be a PC problem?

My monitor has been flickering and sometimes images look like they have had a corrosion spell cast upon them. Then sometimes it seems fine, is this actually my monitor or a computer issue.

Tried checking your wires? I had problems similar to these a while back, they turned out to be a combination of a video card that was loose in it's slot, and a monitor cable that was loose in it's socket.

If it's just individual things that look "corroded," then it's the source that's boned. If it's the entire screen, then quite possibly it's the monitor, I suspect that if it was your video card, it'd go more quickly from minor inconveniences to total burnout.

The wires, was the first thing I cheched, didn't check to see if the video card was lose yet. The corrosion ends up being entire sections of the screen, but not always the same section. There as been no warning just happened the other day, sometimes it does it than it is fine for awhile.

Well, know anyone who can lend you a monitor? It would be pretty easy to find out that way. Borrow it, use it for a day, see if anything happens.

...Uninstall your video drivers, and reinstall them. It's a twenty minute nuisance, but I've had it make my screen flicker before, so it's possible that that's the problem, if you haven't checked it yet.

A couple of things can cause flickering, like being close to a magnetic or power source. Is it always the same spot, or does it vary? Have you degaussed recently? I don't know if that helps, but it shouldn't hurt.

And yeah... try another monitor, or try this monitor on another machine. Rule things out...

Well I now believe it is not a monitor, it went from flickering on screen to the blue screen of death, which says some hardware is in in infinate loop. Leaves blue screen of death to windows, than shuts system down and restarts to blue screen of death etc. Reason I no longer think it is the monitor is the blue screen of death looks fine. I don't know if reinstalling the video card will work but I may give it a try.

Eeeep. Yeah...that sounds like either a video card ate it, or the drivers for said card forgot self destructed.

What kind of video card do you have?

I think it was something like ATI Radeon
5200, will need to look up the proper name but I know it was a 5000 series. Not even sure you can get them anymore. How much are the 7000 series, I don't want a super duper vidioe card for my old piece of crap, just enough to make it run again. Some of those cards are alomost $1000 and I would be just as well off to buy a new computer.

LOL...a 7000 I think you can order for about $35 US.

If you have a PCI slot, you could upgrade as far as ATI's x1300 for about $120 US.

I actually think the highest price card on the market that's for gaming (and not a professional-level 3D renderer) is around $600 US.

Edit: ...On second though, the 5200 was an NVidia product. I would definitely check your drivers.

I'm positive that if you were running ATi drivers, a GeForce 5200 would not have been working properly.

Also, the GeForce 5200 is better than the Radeon 7000.
