Quite honestly, I've never seen the reason for Archers. Why?

#1] They are crap in melee. Even the elite ones aren't worht their cost in melee.

#2] They kill the enemy at a rate of two per volley. I swear, they can't damage the enemy worth anything. The elite hoplites/legionnaires are barely touched by the arrows. The only time I've ever seen arrows do anything to those guys is from the flank. But I'd much rather have Cavalry at the flank.

#3] Infantry and Cavalry kill much faster, and it's far easier to get close to the enemy than stay away from them. Have you ever had an Archer have more kills than your Infantry, let alone your Cavalry?

Someone, please, inform me of how they can actually be used. It seems to me that seige weapons do the job equally as well, can do damage to buildings and splatter elite troops much more efficiently.

They can be used to
A) Deal little amounts of damage that can seriously add up over the course of a battle.
C) FLANK. I swear, I've had an archer unit flank a Praetorian cohort, causing them to rout. Needless to say I was surprised. In other battles I've found that noone goes for archers with cavalry and whanot presenting a greater thread. Its game theory really.

Has anyone tried the SPQR mod? I've heard loads of good things about it. There is no shortage of ambitious mods at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/index.php?showforum=63 btw.

The board is currently down, so I can't see what it does. But I am assuming you can play the Senate starting with Rome as your only city. Could make for an interesting game.

Works fine for me. And no, I don't think you are meant to play as the Senate. SPQR makes the game alot more challenging, mainly by de-nerving roman troops and increasing the opposition. The senate is also a force to be reckoned with.

Yeah, until you run into the fast moving cavalry archers from the Parthians, then you'll get slaughtered.

Not yet. I was planning too, but your review made me reconsider. Is the new version any better? I'm playing SPQR now, btw, and it is truly an awesome mod. You can built entire armies in a single turn, and the opposition has increased tenfold as opposed to the original game. It also turns Carthage into a true powerhouse, by placing additional cities in Africa and South-Italy. Worth checking out.
