Citizens to pause at 3 p.m. for a Moment to reflect on the Sacrifices of our Fallen

WASHINGTON, DC— Monday, May 30, at 3 p.m local time, Major League Baseball games will stop, Amtrak train whistles will blast across the nation and hundreds of other nationwide participants will ask Americans to pause for the Memorial Day National Moment of Remembrance. Established by an Act of Congress, the ‘Moment’ honors those who died in service to our country.

Other participants include Veterans Service Organizations, NASCAR, thoroughbred racing, military installations, the National Constitution Center, Liberty Bell, Pennsylvania Turnpike Authority, schools, universities, hospitals, United Spinal Association, retirement communities, shopping malls, National Parks, National Grocers’ Association, airports, bus lines, and the International Space Station.

All citizens, alone or with family and friends, wherever they may be at 3 p.m., local time, are asked to pause for a Moment of reflection and rededication to give something back to our country in memory of our nation’s fallen. Our goal is to put “Memorial” back into Memorial Day. A Gallup poll revealed that only 28 percent of Americans know the meaning of this noble holiday.

“We want Americans to contemplate those things that bind us together. We want every child to say ‘I know why I am free and I know who died for my freedom.’ The legacy of those who died to keep this country free – from the Revolutionary War to the Present – is something that strengthens and unites us,” said Carmella LaSpada, Director of the White House Commission on Remembrance.

Yep! Indeed I will. Kinda bugs me that this holiday has been turned into more of a 'cookout' day that a day to remember our fallen heroes...

It used to be on the 30th for a long time, and was then switched to the last Monday in May (which happens to be the 30th this year). That ensured it would always be on a three-day weekend, and I think that's when it started losing some of its significance to the masses.

Many have died. Many more will. Thank you for your service.

Z-Man, if it takes a cookout then so be it. So I won't mention the one at the VFW, or over to the Fort.

You know, there's a 'grunt' somewhere eating a half cooked, half sand filled MRE, in 120* heat and loving it. He does it so we can enjoy our babyback ribs, beer, and A/C!

If you don't know anybody, or any place to go, you can stop by and spend your moment here: http://www.militarycity.com/valor/honor.html

Here's an old Cavalry poem, as sung by the 6th and 7th Cav:

Fiddlers' Green
Halfway down the trail to Hell,
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped,
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddlers' Green.

Marching past, straight through to Hell
The Infantry are seen.
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.

Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene.
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen.
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.

And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers' Green.

Lest we forget

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Though the political face of the USA may ebb and flow I am one of many from overseas who appreciate the sacrifice given and still offered and who respects the freedom that it preserves

Thankyou
