From Police Blotters
(1) (Washington Post, April 11) "Mount Olivet Road NE, 1200 block, March 30. An animal control officer responding to a call about a snake in a bathroom reported that the snake was actually a hair band." (2) (Vancouver (Wash.) Columbian, Jan. 7) "A Vancouver police officer was sent to a home in the 3100 block of S Street ... when a woman called 911 to say a group of 30 cannibals from Yacolt were trying to break into her house. (O)fficers were unable to locate any cannibals." (3) (Grass Valley (Calif.) Union, March 30) "A Dorsey Drive convalescent facility reported that one Alzheimer's patient struck another Alzheimer's patient, but neither of them remembered the incident or wanted medical attention."

That's not funny OR weird. What's next, making fun of the handicapped?
People with Alzheimers disease forget things, yes, that's the most important symptom of the disease isn't it? Some patients get aggressive too, because they realise they forget everything and I think you can imagine how frustrated and helpless that makes them feel. So THAT'S why they both forgot about the incident, and possibly also why one of them struck the other - symptoms of one of the worst illnesses there are. It's not funny or strange at all that this happened - I find it deeply sad.
I think I can guess in advance that Stormymystic didn't know what the illness was in the first place, but Arvon, surely you did? It's like saying "an incontinent peed his pants - weird huh??"

Sorry - I'm going to have to disagree with you Melusine. Although an incident from real life it's also a joke. And I won't start down the road where you can't make fun of minorities/disabilities/etc. Because in the end all you could make fun of would be white middle-aged men - and that's me

i do know what the disease is, It has been in my family, that is not really what I was laughig at though, hard to explian, but memory loss is also a very big thing in my family, and that brought up an incident that happened with my brother and me, we fought one night and he forgot it the next morning, but I didn't, and i know how frusterating it is to forget things, I do it all the time(not a joke) but the violence comes from other things, it comes from a part in the brain that dies, it controls the emotion and when it starts dying the person will lose their temper more often, the reason I can laugh at it is because i am laughed at day in and day out for all of my "diseases" so why can I not think something is funny that is not about me? sure joking can get out of hand, but if you laugh at say someone who is trying to rob a bank and drops the gun, you can laugh and call them stupid right? well they might have parkisions disease which made them drop the gun and messed with their mind that made them go crazy, but you still think it was funny.....you know this is really getting out of hand everyone carrying a chip on their shoulder about every little joke or comment that is made, blonde jokes or ok, american jokes are ok, but do not laugh at something that was cute about a disease when you laugh it is most of the time to lighten how you feel anyway so my rant?... can someone post something funny for one time without someone having to insult the people who think it is funny for once?

ps,not trying to start a flame here, just wondering why no one can have alaugh anymore

I know you can make a joke about two people having Alzheimer's but not in this way - the idea of the news items is that there's something odd or unexplainable about them, but with the item in question that's not so.
And I knew when I typed it that people would fall all over me, but I still stand by what I feel on the issue. I know what Alzheimer can do to a person and I can think of few things that are worse. For those that think I have no sense of humour, I can see the way a joke about this could be funny, but I also think you cannot just laugh everything off - try to do volunteer's work in a home for people with Alzheimer and I bet your smile will be wiped off your face pretty quickly.
You can make fun of anything you want and I have nothing to say about it - it's just a disagreement on what is funny. I cannot tell anyone not to make fun of any disability or illness, but I CAN express my own opinion on it.

And Stormy, if you are referring to for instance the French bashing jokes ("can someone post something funny for one time without someone having to insult the people who think it is funny for once?"), then yes, I felt those were out of line too. They made a dear friend of mine leave the forum.
But don't worry, there's little on IW of interest for me these days, what with all the "hey I have this puss-oozing wound" "hey I have to go to the toilet now guys, see you later" "hey, another thought just popped into my head, I just HAD to post it" stuff - so I'll just shut up. If the majority of people feels a certain way, who am I to argue?

true, but there are things I have to laugh off everyday, like being deaf, people make jokes about deaf people alot, and some of them are funny, as for the voluntering, I do not need to, as i said, it is in my family and I see it every day on how it works, as for the not laughing every thing off, if you can not laugh at the hard times life throws at you, then you are going to be miserable for a long time, I have learned this, my friends joke about me being the bionic woman because I have so many scars from surgeries, and I CAN laugh with them, because it is funny to think about being bionic, my husband laughs about a hole behind my ear, because it is an extra hole in my head, lol and it is also funny if you think about it, if you can not laugh at your self, at least smile and you are intitled to your opinions, as we are to ours

edit:
and it is not just the french jokes i was refering to
but i do agree with you about somethings just should not be posted, and i am just as guilty of it i know, but i have tried to limit my topic making to things i feel are worth posting, but please, just because we have a disagreement on one issue does not mean that we can not agree on anything right?

Yes, as I *already* said, if the majority of people has a certain opinion, I'll abide by it, although I don't agree with it. I have never in my entire life felt that people weren't entitled to their opinions.
Alzheimer completely strips a person of their dignity, and when they haven't even their dignity left, I find it hard to make fun of them. If others disagree, that's fine too, but that doesn't mean I won't say how I feel about it.
