Not quite true. The U.S.S. Liberty was attacked during the 1969 Israeli-Arab war. The ship had 27 killed and several injured. There is a book written about the incident. It was not a proud memory of the JFK administration.

What is really needed is a new shuttle. the old tooling was scrapped to prevent the cheapskate option. It's a very old design and the remaining shuttles will not have too much time left.

But are you the american public willing to commit the billions of dollers required? (gratefull it aint my taxes).
Are space stations and shuttles the way to go? perhaps bigger and better telascopes is the way of the future?

Personally, I prefer deathstar, joking aside, why not call it something like, "Unity" or something.

Well, this shuttle (which Nasa canceled this shuttle project called the X-33 and X-34)

I think it IS time for a new design. But Nasa has only 15 billion to play with. (in the Apollo days, they had a budget of 33 Billion).

The Nasa budget is less than 1% of the overall Goverment spending.

Well, the very first shuttle(which never actually got launched, tha bastards!) was named Enterprise. Wanna know what? Because of the (literally) MILLIONS of letters that NASA recieved from Star Trek fans. So yeah, if they get enough public interest, they will take suggestions.

Now, I dont mean to get off on a here, but...It really bothers me that NASA gets so little funding. I mean, if some pork belly senator's pet project can get a few hundred million, and a study of the mating habits of seahorses can get a few hundred more million(that's a realy study BTW, and the real allocation...sickening, isn't it? ), then NASA can certainly have more funds devoted to it. I mean, withouth NASA, there would be a number of inventions that never existed, and many others that wouldn't be in as widespread use as they are today. Personally I think that NASA's budget should be somewhere in the 2-2.5% range, but that's just MO. Space is a very important area of exploration. People constantly complain that NASA's not doing anything worthwhile, while, at the same time, the fat-hogs on Capital Hill keep slashing their budget. You cant have it both ways. Back in the days of the space race, NASA was given IMMENSE funding, and, guess what, we got to the moon first, we invented all kinds of new products, we kickstarted out econemy, and we interested an entire generation in the benefits of a college education. We need something like that now.

But, that's just my opinion...I could be wrong.*
