OK i'm now convinced of making 2 halforc fighter4/barb x meelees with 2 hand weapons for the dmg bonus but: which proficiencys should i give them? spear and polearm for range? or great sword and great axe?

Unless they are second line fighters you should make them fighters, and fight two handed if you don't want to use a shield...two handed weapons are nice but it is hard to find decent magical ones, and your tying up your free hand for little to no bonus...at least with two weapons you get an extra attack.
