Alright...this is going to be a dumb question..but how do I backstab? I have my hidden thief walk up behind someone...and do 4 points of damage? I've never really had a decent thief, and my paladin ways never really made me want to use the technique...but now I am...so could some one tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.

I think the thief has to be in shadows first then attack from behind. But I'm not a hundred percent sure if that's all you do!

Actually, you don't have to hide your thief.
Just make sure you stand right behind your enemies.
You can backstab them even when you are visible and fighting.

Ps: Your thief was using a dagger or a hammer?

A rogue who is hidden (in shadows or invisible) will generally get the backstab bonus on a successful strike. I believe you need a bladed weapon for this to work. It's important to read the combat messages carefully, as the backstab damage is calculated separately from the first hit. Low-level rogues do low-level damage, but that will increase as the rogue goes up in level.

Rogues can also flank an opponent for a backstab; in this case, you don't have to be hidden.
