Just got IWD2 for christmas and I'm having some serious slow down problems. By slow I mean SLOW. So far I'm only in the Palisade, and now that the goblins are attacking the games almost coming to a stand still.

My current system specs are as follows:

AMD Duron 1000Hz
512 Mb ram
64Mb Geforce 4

and in the IWD config screen I have set my settings to a below average PC, Which hasn't done a thing to help speed the game up.

Does anyone know whats going on?, has anyone had any similar trouble?

P.S Already downloaded the patch, it didn't help

If you configured the game to not include all the bells and whistles, and it is still dragging...then the only thing I could guess at would be maybe you have other applications running in the background that is pulling your resources. You know, those little stinkers that constantly are running that either don't belong on your PC to begin with, or are not needed at that time. Do a CTRL+ALT+DEL to look at all the applications working your system. Try turning off the things you can easily identify and are not needed to keep the PC on.

Besides that...I see no problem with your hardware.

Two possibilities

Perhaps the frame rate is set very low - when lowering your settings, keep this at 30.

Or...

In BGII I encountered an odd bug. I blasted a particular enemy with a fireball before he began his required dialgoue. He began his required dialogue intra-battle, and then everything got real laggy. Figured a reload would fix it, but it didn't. The game was permanently laggy. I am pretty sure it had something to do with Windows XP. Had to repatch the game to fix it.

So make sure you have the newest drivers, the most recent patch, etc.

If that doesn't work, check around on the forums for people with Windows XP problems and see if something there doesn't help more.

Nope nothing running in the background, I formatted my PC a few days back and I only have IWD2 installed, at the moment.

I had the frame rate set to 32, and I'm running on Windows 98 not Xp, so I'm really not sure what the problem could be.

Anyway I've now lowered my config to below min spec PC and its finally running better, although its a bit annoying, that I have to resort to lowering it this much.

Kinda simple, but maybe defragging harddrive might help. If you have more than one drive, I would switch your swapfile/Virtual Memory to the second harddrive, then reboot and run Defrag on your "C" drive, then move the Swapfile/VM back to "C", reboot, then if you're like me, defrag your "D" drive with the Games folder. Could be that after reformating and installing Win, you got some gaps...

I'm running AMD 1200, 256 ram with 32mb Geforce MX win 2000

and IWD2 is running bloody weird too, it's like, all jerky and stuff, ever 2 seconds the games sorta freezes for a coupla frames, really rally annoying, framerate is set to defualt of 30 as well...what the heck's going on?
My comp says a defrag is not necessary tho...should i defrag anyway?

Cos this is seriously affecting my enjoyment of this game.

First of all, all Blackisle games work better if you have the bars exactly at the prossesors speed or the lower nearest value. Could work though if you have 750MHz CPU for example and put 800 to the bars as it is too close.

Secondly I would say that a system like the one you describe cannot "hang" in battles. DO you have the latest DirectX installed? If no, try upgrating. Also if you do have a spare disk try installing XP to see what will happen.

Third, a freshly installed system never has "gaps". No need for defragmenting.

One thing you need to know is that a system with WIN98 "sees" only 128MB of memory and the rest is used as "secondary cashe". So a system with win98 and 512MB of memory usualy does not have a swap file except you run photo editing software or use many "heavy" programs togeather.

Do you have a quick hard disk? Have you encountered any similar problems with BG2/ToB?

As for win2k, if you enable 3D in BG series games, it does not work well.
