I don't know if I ever told you, but as a hobby I collect, learn, and sing Irish folk music. My particular passion is drinking songs. All this talk of drink and merriment makes me feel I should show you one of my personal favorites. I love singing this one:

This song is called "Tim Finnegan's Wake". It's an old Dublin street ballad about a worker/laborer by the name of Tim Finnegan. He got drunk one morning and fell from a ladder and died. Well, the held a wake for him, and there was all sorts of drinking and dancing at this wake.

The irish author James Joyce heard this street ballad and was so impressed with the concept of the wiskey, or "water of life" in Gaelic, at a wake that he wrote a rather lengthy story about it. But I digress. Here's the short story of Time Finnegan's wake. I wish I could sing it for everyone, but due to the limitations of the internet I suppose the text will suffice

Tim Finnegan's Wake

Tim Finnegan lived in Walkin' Street
A gentle Irishman mighty odd;
He'd a beautiful brogue both rich and sweet
And to rise in the world he carried a hod.
Now Tim had a sort of the tipplin' way
With a love of for the liquor poor Tim was born
And to help him on with his work each day
He'd a "drop of the cray-thur" every morn.

Whack fol the darn O, dance to your partner
Whirl the floor, your trotters shake;
Wasn't it the truth I told you
Lots of fun at Finnegan's wake!

One mornin' Tim felt rather full
His head was heavy which made him shake;
He fell from the ladder and broke his skull
And they carried him home his corpse to wake.
They rolled him up in a nice clean sheet
And laid him out upon the bed,
A gallon of whiskey at his feet
And a barrel of porter at his head.

His friends assembled at the wake
And Mrs. Finnegan called for lunch,
First they brought in tay and cake
Then pipes, tobacco and whiskey punch.
Biddy O'Brien began to cry
"Such a nice clean corpse, did you ever see?
"O Tim, mavourneen, why did you die?"
Arragh, hold your gob said Paddy McGhee!

Then Maggie O'Connor took up the job
"O Biddy," says she, "You're wrong, I'm sure"
Biddy she gave her a belt in the gob
And left her sprawlin' on the floor.
And then the war did soon engage
'Twas woman to woman and man to man,
Shillelagh law was all the rage
And a row and a ruction soon began.

Then Mickey Maloney ducked his head
When a noggin of whiskey flew at him,
It missed, and falling on the bed
The liquor scattered over Tim!
The corpse revives! See how he raises!
Timothy rising from the bed,
Says,"Whirl your whiskey around like blazes
Thanum an Dhul! Do you thunk I'm dead?"

ROTFL, Waluin! There's an Appalachian folk legend that a bottle of Kentucky or Tennessee Bourbon poured over a grave will bring the corpse back to life. It probably has roots in some of the old Celtic legends, since a lot of Irish and Scots settled in Appalachia when they first came to the US.

I've never tried it, of course...who wants a corpse coming 'round the house?

Great song! I'm a fan of Celtic music and legends, myself.

How's everyone doing? What are we all up to this weekend?

I'm just going to start a 48 hour ToB gaming marathon, it's pretty tough from the start. I need to finish it before I go back to work on Monday, otherwise I might not have a job on Tuesday.
