Help! Problem with training Mercantile skill

I decided to reinstall Morrowind and have another go at the game, since I didn't finish the first time I played. I made a character with Mercantile as a minor skill. My personality is 40, I'm still at level one. No hang on, I just leveled up - it's 42 now. The problem is that I tried haggling several times to up my mercantile skill, and the first few times it worked and I progressed 5%. But after that, I had several successful attempts at haggling (I received 1 or 2 goldpieces more) but the Mercantile skill refuses to go up. Could there be anything I'm missing, or is it a bug? And if the latter, what do I do about it?

Edit: oh yeah, this might affect the problem: sometimes my offer was refused, and I pressed cancel, spoke to the shopkeeper again and tried to haggle once more, this time successfully. I didn't think it'd affect your progress in a skill if you failed sometimes but maybe it does?

I usually keep trying to offer even if the shopkeep refuses; luck is a factor and if the price is reasonably reasonable, you'll succeed eventually. If the reputation drops too much, you can quit the conversation and start over for future sales.
Perhaps failing helps, perhaps getting the better price helps, but it works in my game.
So if it doesn't in yours, it may well be a bug.

No, the problem is not that I don't succeed at haggling, the problem is that when I do, my mercantile skill doesn't progress (it remains at 5%). And if it's a bug, what could I do about it??

Yes, it's a bug. The skill won't raise normally by dealing with traders. The only way of raising it that I found is by paying a skill teacher to raise the skill for you. However, raising the skill will then create another bug.

I understand Mel. My thinking was you mightn't have haggled for sufficient gain to advance any, although I've never experienced that as a problem myself.

Thanks Legolas. I installed the Tribunal expansion and patched it, and I think the skill's increasing now. [img]smile.gif[/img]

when you say its not increasing, do you mean you wait and wait and it doesn't go up? or do you mean the progress bar doesn't change?
