I found cold spells to be rather useless in IWD. Any thoughts for this game?

Icelance is a nice high damage to single enemey spell, plus it has a chance of stunning. Good to use once combat has been joined and you can't use area spells.

Without saying much there are CERTAIN PLACES where you are fighting fire based creatures and non-cold loving creatures where cold spells can be useful. But personaly I like acid and poison cuz they effect MOST creatures no matter what their climate preference is. HoF staff of Greater Spell resistance is GREAT. Give it to a barbarian with high strength and watch him bludgeon/poison everything.

Question Mark

It is true that there is a dearth of cold-based spells in IWD2. However, Cone of Cold should be a staple of every mage's spellbook while sorcerers should pass on it. Once your mage takes Aegis of Rime, your cold spells are slightly better, of course.

Gammit, perhaps you might want to give some thought to designing a useful cold-based spell. Let us know, won't you?

Since most of the game takes place in Cold climates... I passed on ice and snow spells. Boned up on all the fire and acid spells I could get my hands on.

There seem to be VERY few things in the game that cold is usefull against.

Design some useful cold spells for an IWD game? Hmmmm... that's a tough one. I'd say (I have no idea if these aren't already spells. So, if they already are, forgive me):

1.) Chill Blood
a high-level arcane spell that turns any water in a person/monster's body to ice, thus shattering it. Creatures without body fluids and/or solid bodies (ex. jellies) would, of course, be immune.

2.) Zone of Frost
a mid to high-level druid spell that surrounds a creature in a zone (similar to an imprisonment spell) that completely removes all heat from said target area. Creatures with immunity to cold damage would be immune.

Now that I think of these, they might be fun.

Well... cold work on all humans and humanoids we encounter, and we encounter a lot of those. I once killed a pack of berseking barbarians with a cone of cold.

Sounds like a variant of Finger of Death, except death is caused by freezing; a Fortitude save sounds appropriate, with success resulting in no effect. Unfortunately, I cannot make certain creatures immune to the spell retroactively. Just for reference, a jelly would be almost nothing except liquid; an elemental, on the other hand....

Yes, but what would the zone of frost actually do? Harm the creature targeted or those around it?

I don't mind working on creating these; it should test my ability with editing/creating spells in the now-altered Infinity engine. In fact, I haven't tried editing/creating anything yet, but the theory is sound....

By the way, if these cold spells don't work please don't cryo over spilled milk. I had to put that one in there....

Yes, but without a "shell" to contain it, a jelly would just expand when frozen. I'm talking about the damage a humanoid would take if all the water in its body turned to ice and expanded... thus rupturing all your cells.

Good question, Az. I initially thought it should harm the targeted creature, but then again... harming all those within that zone (say 10 foot radius) might be cooler. Imagine having your surrounding environment go from ambient temperature to absolute 0 instantaneously... now that's some cool damage.
