I've noticed that there are a large number of 'pages ' to the gen. forum. This has to be expensive to store an recover information. It must take a lot of server storage. Is there some way to catalog older infromation (titles) and compress the bulk of the pages, say the oldest 15 pages? This stuff could archived and recalled via say e-mail or some such method. Remember within these pages are threads with several pages. Just a thought...from someone who played computer on a 4k machine.

I doubt it takes up that much space seeing as it is just text. How many posts are the last 15 pages? Well if it is 30,000 posts and each post is on average....hmmm 1000 characters (?) then we have 30,000,000 characters. This is 30MB. See it's not that bad. All avatars are only stored once, no matter how many posts they appear in and the actual software for the board does not take up more space just cos there are more posts so it really is just extra text.

Agreed but....except for the 10M you might get free from your ISP you gotta pay for space... 30M is how much?

Yeah, this forum is about 800MB now, but UBB already compresses the files.. If you want to see less pages when reading though, edit your profile settings to show 'last 5 days' or something like that. This new UBB doesn't have an archive option.. very weird too. When v5 did, and upgraded to v6, it made my archives actual FORUMS and not 'archives'.. I dunno WHY they did that.. very dumb IMHO! Believe me, it DOES take up space.. we have hundreds of thousands of posts, and that adds up.. nearly 800 MEGS worth!!! I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw how big it had gotten. Before the forum, my website was around 160MB lol!!

Maybe it's a good time to remind people not to just post "I'm bored" stuff and more 'spammy' threads for a while? Seems to me we should respect the work Z is doing for us by NOT filling up his storage space too fast.

Hey Ziroc, it's just that we love IW! And you are a sweetie for putting up with all our chatter!

Love all the new smileys!

My computer has a 40 gig hard drive, but that's cause my dad is really into computers so he likes to keep it as up to date as possible.

i do have a question about storage space... since it is in the internet, Z's storage space is based on the internet space or based on his hard disk... im kinda confused where he actually stores the data and info... if it is in his HD.. i heard that hard disk is pretty cheap nowadays.

Hark, cheap or not, I think it's still a bit rude of us all to just keep happily churing out stuff to fill it up and make Z keep needing MORE space if we could be a bit more prudent about what we post!

By which I mean the stuff Z doesn't want to see, like "this place is dying" posts and "I'm bored" or "gee don't have anything to say but I'm posting anyway" threads... you know what I mean.
