I have the tendency to ramble, so I'll do my best to keep this one short.

I'm debating buying BG1 and starting a character in it, and going all the way through BG2... no expansion packs tho. Just 1-2 plain and minimally modded. My big question tho is: Is it really worth it? From what I understand, any items that you carry over from BG1 get lost anyway once you start BG2. And as much as I love the fun factor of games, it just seems like it's hardly worth putting so much work into a character and not being able to use them in the state I worked to get them to. Would I be better off just getting ToB or another game that I can take my BG2 character into? I just hate putting so much work into characters and then having them stripped...

just reminds me too much of my DM in the P&P days

i would suggest either, or combing all of them and getting bg 1, tosc, and tob, and have one big game!

as for the item, if you pause the game as soon as you can in bg 2, you can have all your items, and you can drop em, the game autosaves, pick em up, and you can keep em.

I have been asking this question too but for a different reason. I had BG 1 on my old computer, played it, enjoyed it, and then deleted it to make room for only activities. I recently got a new computer and in addition to loading BG2 I have loaded BG1 to see how it plays on the newer, faster, machine. Now I am wodering if I should play it to conclusion, build my character's level up to the max and then transfer them to BG2.

I started with Balsur’s gate I and loved it more than words could ever describe. That love affair ended with SoA. After two years of playing SoA, and more recently ToB, I never go back to the first one and I have no real desire to go back to the beginning. I tried starting a character in BG1 and carrying him all the way to ToB but after hours of clearing yet another wilderness map just made it way to boring. If you are going to get only one go with TOB, I think you will be much happier in the long run.

Well, I've already been debating getting ToB for a month or so now. And I have a big list of reasons I should... Mainly I'm just curious is there's anything in BG1 that makes going through it worth the trouble... Aside from equipment, for obvious reasons.

Let me try to explain better... Ummmm, k, the tears at the end of BG2, they bestoe (bestowe, bestow?) permanent effects to your PC. Effects that won't change if you just happen to lose your gear again. I know BG1 has a few books or what not that raise stats, but is that it?

I'm probably gonna get Tob regardless one day, I'm just not sure where I should start BG1 or 2... and after Tob, where I can finish. Can I go into another game with the character after ToB?

It is worth buying both BG1 and TOB as there is a very long (ie starts in BG1 ,
carries on in BG 2 and is completed in TOB quest that when you first start it, you wont have the foggiest idea what it means. However, it is well worth it in the end.

If you want to know more, ask and I will spoil further.
