1. there is a recent thread about not believing everything you read (I'm not trying to be smart-ass, its just the truth!) 2. who cares? Screw MS! In 2005 they will own half the world! Why? Because they *want to* and there is nothing you can do about it. To counter MS's upcoming totalitarian reign there are two options: 1) Everyone must boycot usage of MS software products, which will result in collapsing the global economy or 2) Open source will make an astonishing break-through, forcing MS to co-op with them and giving up their monopoly-position to open up the digital world to every developer out there. Point 1 is not a valid option and point 2 will not happen, so: MS will take over!

Point 1 is not a valid option and point 2 will not happen, so: MS will take over!
I believe that about WMP 9 because I have experienced it slyly connecting to MS servers when my firewall was off. Also, credible PC magazines have discussed these issues - MS even admits it! Actually point 1) is valid - in the end the customers do have the veto with their wallets. We can not buy MS products - I can't think of any area in which they have a product for which there is no good alternative. MS's strongest area is obviously the OS and even there there are plenty of options starting from Linux to other platforms like Macs. 2) Open source IS making an astonishing break-through in case you haven't noticed. Linux already has all the features and more than Windows does, the only thing that's lacking is the ease-of-use - once this catches up with Windows, MS will have to rethink their business strategies.

Yeh but Vaskez you probably had winmp set to connect automatically or something. There is a way to make it not connect at all.

I use Winamp 3 for mp3 files, and Realplayer for movies (or Divx, whatever program I find first)

Winamp 2.9 for MP3, I'll never install winamp 3.
BsPlayer for video. Way better than wmp.

Link, BsPlayer is free and can be downloaded here. I also like MV2player since it allows two subtitles. I also have PowerDVD which came with my DVD player. Never watch DVDs on my computer though.
