DungeonBeGone this, ShadowKeeper that. Mods, hacks, consoles galore. Tell me, does anyone in this community NOT use cheats of some sort? Just curious.

Hmmm. Not all of the above mentioned utilities are cheats, you know. Some can be used for cheating yes, but ShadowKeeper for example can be used to fix bugs and find out item codes for items which should have been given to you but weren't, etc.
I don't think there are too many people who use 'hacks', and most people use the console to spawn the aforementioned missing items. Some mods, like the Tactics mod, bring a new flavour and difficulty into the game, a game which rapidly gets boring once you've discovered everything about it. I don't see this as cheating... in fact, its almost the opposite. The DungeonBeGone mod is probably the biggest 'cheat' out of all the things you've mentioned. However, I don't have any problem with using it myself, since the beginning dungeon is the most boring part of any game, and, as a chronic reloader, I dread walking the dreary tunnels of that place, searching for acorns. Basically, ANY class can tackle the original dungeon SOLO. So if that's so, and you find the experience tedious, why not use DungeonBeGone? Another option is to install the II module of Tactics to improve Irenicus's dungeon, but that also becomes boring (and annoying) after a while. Oh well. Its up to the player to find the best way of playing the game for them, the way that gives the most enjoyment. After all, that's why the games are made (and obviously a little profit for the gaming companies is a bonus for them ) [ 07-17-2003, 09:47 PM: Message edited by: pcgiant ]

Tsk, tsk, tsk, these aren't hacks or cheats Perlninja, let me explain.
Dungeon-Be-Gone is just a quicker way to get out of Irenicus' Dungeon that veterans use because, quite honestly, some could do it blind folded after going through it so much. SK isn't cheating either, only if you jack up your Pc's statistics all to 25, then yea that would be cheating. I use SK to replace lost items, plus it's a good source of info on all the game's bad guys. Other mods like Tactics, Items Upgrade and so forth add some flavor to the game you know? But I guess making enemies harder with Tactics mod is just a big way of cheating eh? Ease-Of-Use gets some of the wrenches out of the gears of the game, it gets rid of some ugly spell animations, plus it silenced You Must Gather Your Party Before Venturing Forth (praise be to God). ('Tis funny though, that ~4 months ago, I asked nearly the same question, and I'm giving you pretty much the same answer I got.)

hmmm, I would say it depends on how you use them. I only use shadow keeper to change my NPC's portraits and just recently their classes. I wouldn't consider this cheating, just changing. For the CLUA console I just use command J to "teleport" to different places if I have a big distance to cover and I know I'm not going to run into anyone. For instance, I don't do it if the game is at about 21 hours so I won't "cheat" myself out of running into a hostile party. And the mods I use just make the game harder(tactics) or less annoying(ease of use). I think all of this comes from playing the game over and over and over and over and over and over again. The first time I played the game it was untouched. After that it has only been touched up.

I admitt that I do have SK, and I do use it, but only for certain things. I only use it to change portraits (one portrait so far...I liked Minsc's BG1 portrait better than his BG2 portrait, so I changed it to the BG1 pic), and to see what items are in the game. I don't give my characters any buffs or anything, I just like to see what items can be in the game that I havn't found yet. Plus, if there was a convo that needs to occur, but has not happened even though it's supposed to, I check out the CLUA for those creatures to try to trigger the convo. I don't play with mods or patches or any of that stuff (I had BG2 installed on a computer that didn't have internet on it, but I recently put internet back on it, so I might install the patch to fix the "x is too busy to speak to you" or what ever it says). But I have used the clua to bring in 2 items into the game that allow you to eventually make the Big Unit in ToB, but I ended up not using the Big Unit anyway since I didn't like the way it looked. But yes, I do consider this stuff is kinda cheating.

Sure, you can make the game substantialy easier with the item upgrade mods and such, but most players aim to make the game harder.

I rarely use Shadowkeeper for anything other than giving my characters outlandish colours.
Most mods make the game harder in some way. The most blatant cheat I've ever used must be the concurrent romances hack. Hardly a gamebreaker.

i rarely use SK either. For me, using the SK to buff or modify the character always give me the emotion to buff your character to the maximum stats and advantages.it always happens like that for me.in my mind, if you use only the SK only to change your char stats just a bit, i think that:why dont you just maximize your stats instead of just changing it just a bit?thats one thing why i rarely use SK.cause if u maximaize it till tis maximum, why play bg2?no challenges.
but sometimes, i use it to make an experiment on bg2.im quite curios to change this and that and see what happens to char later.i wouldn's count it as a cheat if u use it againts bugs.why play in a bugging game, if u can fix it with SK? above all, it depends on the style of your play.if u like to play the game in a certain way, well..just do it.have fun.thats what games r for right? -------------------- [ 07-18-2003, 09:59 AM: Message edited by: BaRoN NiGhT ] |
