The tectonic plates that make up the earths crust 'float' (allowing movement) on magma that makes up the earths mantle. If the magma was replaced by gas there is less force to keep the plates up (since the gas cant build up pressure due to the holes at the N & S poles) so the earths crust would probably implode (the only thing thing that could keep it up would be friction between plates which wouldnt be strong enough against millions of tonnes of rock). Lava. How do you get lava when the centre of the earth is gas? Currently for every 100ms into the crust you get an increase of 3 degrees C. So if the surface temp is 15 degrees and the max livable temp is 50 C you could only go a max of around 1.2km below the surface. Any further and you would probably be crushed anyway. And with a sun at the centre of the earth the temps would rise alot more. Quote:
