Thief & Thief II

I bought both of these games for a tenner (£10..US $15) a while back. I started both of them but never got far. I've read good and bad reviews and can't make my mind up whether or not to have another crack at them. I don't want to carry on only to give up later through the game not living up to the hype.

Can anyone here recommend them or rag on them? I'd rather listen to people here that have played the game, rather than the reviews by people I don't know.

Anyone played em, what did you think? Good and Bad input appreciated but no spoils. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Let me just say this: Those 2 games are in my personal top 5 favorite games of ALL time. The first game that actually made me jump in my chair. TRUST me when I say this Charlie--Give it some time, learn the interface, and you'' look back in 5 years and call it one of your favorite games!

Trust me man, they are truely games with the best atmosphere ever created, bar none.

One reason the games were cheap is because of no manual. It's on a disc and you read it from the PC which is a bummer. I like to lay in bed and read the game manuals, or maybe refer to them during play. Maybe this is one reason I've struggled to get into them, trying to feel my way around the interface.

Tell me, is T2 a direct follow up of T1, is it the same character? Will I benefit from playing T1 first or is it ok to do T2 and then T1? OOI, which did you prefer?

I am with Z all the way here. Thief 1 and 2 are extremely unique. Their game play is utterly fantastic. If you are looking for hack and slash, kill everything in sight then return your games now. But if you are looking for an immersive story line, a game where stealth, patience and tactics are attractive to you, these games are it. Get ready for a game setting unlike you have ever played before. And as Z has said, I, too, jumped in my chair. The first time I went to the Bonehoard with those Zombies... The Haunted Cathedral and the Return to the Haunted Cathedral... man I'm scaring myself just thinking about it.

Thief III is supposed to be out in the next year and believe me when I tell you it is one of the most anticipated games in the gaming community.

By all means, start with T1. T2 is a continuation, but it is definitly different story wise -- and, yet, there is an important underlying thread that binds the two together. T3 is to be the climax.

I know you don't want any spoilers, but I know very few people who haven't needed direction concerning these games. Each chapter is huge and I mean HUGE! In a sense the games are linear, meaning that you have to finish one chapter to move on to the next, but each chapter is totally non-linear, meaning that you can go all over the place in that chapter. Anyway, here is an excellent website that can help you if you need direction: www.ttlg.com They also have links to www.thief-the-circle.com which has walkthroughs. Trust me, somewhere along the way you'll need guidance. Let us know how it turns out.

Also, pay close attention to the tutor in the beginning of T1. Go over it and over it until you get the hang of the interface. One more thing, items of worth that you collect, i.e., candle sticks, gold, etc. are extremely important because you will use this gold, et.al in order to purchase equipment for the next chapter. It is important to get as much as you can. Unfortuantly, any leftover gold doesn't carry over. Good luck and whatever you do keep it on normal setting until you get the hang.

P.S. Reloading is a given. You WILL die.
