I've never really thought about this until just now.

Why does your comp make such an irriating noise when connecting to the internet? How come it doesn't sound like a normal phone call?

What your hearing is the normal phone dialing tones, plus the carrier wave, plus the initial data exchange that the modem uses to negotiate and synchronise. After that the speaker is turned off.

You can usualy turn them off in control panel->modems , but modem control codes are not standardised enough for that to be reliable, so it might not work unless you have the proper drivers or put the codes in manualy.

I couldn't get the switch off option to work for me, but inserting one old redundant headphone plug in the modem sound output works a treat - no noise at all.

Wow, never knew that . I just thought my computer was extra-special . I don't have to worry about that anymore though I got DSL.
