I love hubblesite. It takes a few glimpses at the universe to remind us all how thoroughly insignificant humanity is. Who are we to think we're so important?

But it's true. You're looking billions of years into the past when you gaze at stars and galaxies, witnessing some events that took place before we learned how to walk upright, and some that occurred before life even began on this insignificant little mudpile we call Earth. You gaze across distances that are so vast, light itself takes millions of years to cover them. What is humanity compared to such times and distances? Not much.
It puts an annoying parking ticket into perspective.

Sol is to small to go supernova. What it will do is swell up into a red giant, melting mercury and venus in the process, maybe earth as well, and then collapse into a dwarf star, losing its outer layers in the process. I think, its a while since I paid any attention to stellar mechanics.
I think there are some nearby stars that are large enough to go supernova, though, Sirius for one. Does anyone know what effect a supernova at that distance would have on life on earth?
