Im a thf halfling... lvl 2 with 15hp. just got the caravan quest from the guy.. I go south past the bridge but get attacked in the city from about 8 orcs... both long range and melee...I died instantly. Is it possible to play one char party? Or must you create more? Any NPCS I can pick up yet? or can you only create them?

In IWD there are no NPCs to join your party. This game is designed so that you can create up to 6 party members. I have played with two different parties of 6 and prefer it that way. Some only play with a total of 4 and there are those who actually do solo, but it is an EXTREMELY difficult way to play. So I do admire people who take that route. I think playing simply as a thief will be very difficult. For what it is worth this was my last party (I used all races because I could!):
Half-elf: Fighter Dwarf: Fighter Halfling: Fighter/Thief (this way he could use a magical long bow; many good magical long bows in the game but game is woefully lacking good magical short bows. A straight thief can only use short bows) Human: Cleric (he turned out to be very important) Gnome: Cleric/Illustionist (absolutely great combination) Elf: Fighter/Mage (not a specialist mage; him and the gnome were my two favorites; remember though elves can only be resurrected, Raise Dead won't cut it) * So this gave me 4 Fighters, 2 Clerics, 2 Mages, and 1 Thief. It was a VERY effective group. My suggestion to you is create a 6 party group and play through and get the feel of the game. Then if you want by all means solo. Create your party the way you want. Balance is the key though. |

I would not suggest playing the game with one char if its your first time. The people who have played it with one used a multi-class Fighter/Thief/Mage.
