Vinyl actually went nowhere, is loved by many, and has seen a recent resurgence. Pearl Jam has sent out an exclusive vinyl christmas single to club members every year since the 90s. Every major Hip Hop and Punk release EVER* has come out on Vinyl. A resurgence in the last few years has led to new heights of demand for new releases and re-issues, but nobody knows if the growth will last or if this is just short term trend in what was already a speciality market. Whatever the future, this a great time for vinyl, lots of great stuff being produced.

Something else in particular I consider special about the sound of vinyl is that whole eras of music were recorded with the intention the listener would hear it played from a turntable.
