The article mentions how young birds use their wings (at the right angle) to force their feet down on the ground and allow for better traction. It makes reference to race cars using the same technique. After seeing a way cool show on Indy cars the other day, I thought I'd mention that an indy car going at about 150 mph has enough force exerted down on it by the inverted wings (including its body, which is aerodynamically on big inverted wing) that it can actually travel on the ceiling. Interesting.. I took my kids to see the Chinese dinosaur exhibition a few days ago in Sydney and some of the displays were of feathered dinosaurs that at that stage had not learned to fly properly but whose bone structure were of the lighter weight that is necessary for flight. These were the first feathered dinosaurs ever discovered (1996 iirc).

Is that the Parrotosaurus? Is it of the bird-hipped or lizard-hipped variety?

TL: Yeah, Indycars are amazing pieces of engineering. The total force at speed is actually on the order of 3 gees - that's why drivers try so hard to keep their momentum up in the corners.
Try playing the vintage Papyrus Indycar game some time, test drive on the Toronto track - there is one stretch that's impossible to drive through without smacking the wall unless you floor it! Amazing physics engine in that game...
