Do familiars get better as the game goes on. Do they really offer good advice on puzzles.

Is the rabbit familliar supposed to be able to pickpocket? The dialog implies it can, but mine has the thieving skill icon greyed-out

There is a bug bug involving the familiar abilities, and most don't work. =P But, yeah, they're good for hit points.
