I can't really recommend you to take those out in the beginning cause they are quite hard.
The backstab damage gets better after the level increases..

this is a tough fight for new char.

your best bet is to try a hit & run, pop off a fireball into the room (before they turn hostile), run like hell down stairs, a few of them will follow you downstairs, beat the hell out of them - focus on the mage or imp, first.

take a walk, go rest at inn next door, and repeat process as needed.

you could also try & backstab the mage, but i was never able to clear out the room after the mage wend down.

I think your backstab modifier won't get better than an ordinary thief until you reach level 15 or so I think... I may be off.

Can an elf get a break anywhere these days?

Yeah, try and lure them downstairs one by one .Finally, the thief will run away if you don't kill him quickly(he'll use his invisibility ring and backstab your main player character),so when he makes his move hit him with everything you've got and cast hold person on him.(maybe use a detect invisibility spell also).

The difference between an assassin and the other thief is that other thiefs stop getting extra multipliers after level 15
Assassin wil go on getting extra mul;tipliers

What I made was: cast some hold person and charm on these folks... having some of them on your side or paralised will help much

Fire elementals and woodland being, take out the mage and the imp first, surround the thief with summoned critters so he cannot backstab you. Drawf and barbarian falls easily to charm, although others have suggested Emotion Holpnessless also works.
