I got my lap top a year ago in December. I have had countless problems with it: first six months I went through 3 power cables because we frayed and broke, DVD drive broke and had to be replaced, hard drive crashed and had to be replaces, as well as a host of other little problems. Today was the last straw. I sent my comp in to Dell to have the touch pad mouse repaired that had been broken since November but I was waiting until I would be gone somewhere to send it in. It was wairing for me when I returned.
I got it out this morning. Mouse working great. But.......it wouldn't read my CD drive. .....or the A drive. So, I called Dell and after 2 1/2 hours they determined that my motherboard was shot to hell. At this point I lost it. I told them I had had enough. And after sending it to them and getting it back and something new was broken, I was fed up. The end result: in 10 to 12 business days, they are sending me a new computer. One just like mine OR if they don't have any in stock and better model. It has been a frustrating year and a half, but I will give Dell credit, they are giving me new computer

Tom, they do make good products. I think that I just got a lemon. I will say that Dell has offered excellent user support and have done everything I could expect to accommodate me. Yesterday when they asked what I wanted I told them a new comp and they said OK. No hassles! In spite of the problems I have had, I would buy from them again.

Well my sony laptop has been under heavy use about 8 hours a day for 9 months with no problems.
My friends compaq has been fixed three times. It has a new mother board new optical drive and a new hard drive. But he thinks hes the smartest consumer in the world. Because he bought the taiwanese made one with the extended warranty, so he has a all new laptop for nothing. And hed probably buy compaq again. Whereas if I were him, I would curse their name for selling a peice of crap and Id only buy japanese made things ever anyway. They have laws about selling anything faulty to consumers there. Anyhow it just shows that different people value different things and develop different brand identities. Dell is famous for good warranties. They dont actually make laptops they import them. |

Thats why if somebody who was new to computers asked me where to buy from, i'd say Dell. They have decent prices, and that tech support is a life saver for anyone having problems. Dell was the first comp my bro got, still running rock solid 4 years later (even when its chock full of viruses...lol that will teach him for not using a virus scanner!)

I can understand that.
I bought a computer from an online store about 6 months ago and I had to face the notorious VIA chipset motherboard and Geforce 4 problem. I manage to fix it but then it broke down on Christmas Day, actually Windows crashed and I had to re-install the damn thing. The comp. have been working since then somewhat but I can´t get OpenGL to work without some problems even though my Geforce 4 supports it and no matter what drivers I download and install. So I have some experience of these kind of problems, yes.

I forgot to mention that it is under warranty until November 2004. THAT was a smart move I made.
