Here is a bump. I have a year's supply of bumps.

I have a question for the forum. Why do I see insults followed up by smiley faces? Does it mean that the insult wasn't intended and the fingers just slipped? Does it mean "Hey I'm kidding" You know I don't use smiley faces because they seem a bit contrived and artificial. Thats just me. I don't condemn the use of them though. I'm just a curious fellow over here.

I was thinking like you some time ago, and now I would say that smileys in a way are very useful to cope with the lack of any body language. I'm not very creative using them, I pretty much turn between , , , , and the occasional copy-paste of one of the smileys on top of the posting window (although I have a fondness for the Bubbling girl - still trying to bubble like that in RL ).

And yes, putting a smiley ( usually) after an insult means just that, "Hey I'm kidding" !

A bump and a "comment":

For the most part, the smileys do help diffuse anger by attempting to use "non-verbal cues" on how the person is feeling or what their intention is. I have also seen some people use them thinking that they can get by with "murder" as long as they use a wink or a smile while they're saying it. I don't think that fools too many people, though...at least I know it doesn't fool me for an instant!

I do, however, advocate the use of smilies in the polite conversations, because they do help dispel any misunderstandings that could occur when used appropriately.

Cheers,

Might I add something? Many members, including me, Neb, and others, have given up posting on the War forum because it is simply too firey there. We don't even look at it anymore. So, if you would like to discuss things like how the new forum is doing, or have an important post to make (like members being banned), IMHO, it is better to post it on GD, because we ALL frequent GD, but many of us no longer venture into the War forum.
Just MHO.

Just MHO.

Making an announcement about what is going on is fine. Commenting on it or continuing a "flame-fest" here in GD isn't.

Right now, one of my jobs here is a "Goalie". I look for stuff streaming out of that forum into GD and take my hockey stick and knock it back where it belongs.

Cheers,
