Hello everyone...

I have big problem. I couldn't run WW after buying a new PC. I have P4 2.4 512 ddr 400 and ATI R9700 Pro and using WinXP Pro. The problem is that every time i try to run the game it exits with a following error:

"the instruction at 00423dba referenced memory at address 0020eb1000"
"the memory could not be written"
"press ok to terminate the application."

Sometimes the memory adrres (second one) is different but instruction (00423dba) is always the same.
I tried everything form installing several versions of drivers to different version of directx. None of them works.......even compatibility mode doesn't work. I looked to the "debug.log" file and saw that game doesn's recognize my 3d card (direct3d is off) but i think that's not the case. Also installing patch didn't help. I would really like to play that game again but........

Any solution would be greatly appreciated...

Thx in advance....

Hmmm.... this smells challenging...

Okay, in order...

1. What else is running on the system? Use task manager to eliminate all but the essentials. A list is in the Tech Tips thread.

2. Do you have W&W configured for hardware or software mode? Switch it to software mode if needed; that's less intense.

3. Have you patched Windows lately? You might try the latest patches, specifically for DirectX. If something is hosed in there, like a .dll or something, that could fix it.

4. Do you have the latest set of drivers for your video card? Willow may be along later to clarify, but there are certain sets of drivers that will work better. Search the forum postings for "video drivers" and you should get an idea.

That's it for starters, but try that and let us know. We haven't been stumped yet!

Welcome to the board, Overfiend.

This sounds very close to my original issue with W&W. My vid card was a dinky little 8mb nVidia. As soon as I replaced the vid card with a much better one the game ran just fine.

Just on a lark, you may want to check the installation of the vid card...both physical and software/drivers. Most newer vid cards have diagnostic software tools with the installation disk(s). You may also be able to discover something by running dxdiag from the Run menu.

Are you having any problems with other games that are graphic intensive?

Also, you should run a disk cleanup and defrag from the Programs>Accessories>System Tools menu.

Let us know how it's going ... we will try (and probably succeed ) in getting you up and running!

Click on run under the start button & type in "dxdiag". This will run a diagnostic for direct x on your pc. Maybe it is a directx problem. My old pc with 8mb of video ram could just handle the game.
Directx 9 is downloadable from the internet & I have used it on W&W with no ill effects.
W&W is not compatable with xp but there is a fix in the tech thread that works well. It involves using a small program called virtualdub. You wont encounter this problem until you start playing the game.
Good Luck.

This shouldn't be too hard to fix.

a) Direct3D. W&W isn't compatible with any ATI card. It's only has support for Nvidia and old 3DFx cards. However there is a fix for this. Download the ATI Radeon patch. That should take care of your Direct3D problem.
b) Memory errors is probably due to the memory write protection (I'm currently investigating that) that was introduced in Windows 2000 and is therefore not supported by W&W. The workaround is to run the game in Windows 95 compatibility mode. Instructions on how to do that is in the tech tips.

I doubt you need to update your catalyst drivers but you could check what version you are running. I managed to get the game running with Catalyst 3.7 using a Radeon 9700 Pro. I've also got the game to work with Catalyst 3.10 using a Radeon 9800 XT which I'm currently using.

Oh and welcome to the board!
