From Wired News:

ACLU Acts Against Patriot Act (U.S. vs. Them Wednesday)
http://go.hotwired.com/news/conflict....html/wn_ascii

The American Civil Liberties Union has had enough of some aspects of
the Bush administration's Patriot Act, and it's launching a visible,
nationwide campaign against it
--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I love the story of the college student that faced down the 2 FBI agents at her door. It only took her 45 mins to get them to leave, good for her!

Sometimes you just have to say God bless to the ACLU. It's a voice someone's gotta provide - and it ain't easy. The FBI neighbor-reporting thing is just too McCarthy-ish for me. It can get very scary very quickly when the government is sorting citizens based on political views. We have not had much of that in our brief history in this country, but I do fear it may soon come to pass yet again.

[edit] - Oh, and by the way, once some of this stuff reaches the Supreme Court it WILL get knocked out, on *several* Constitutional grounds. No matter how conservative the Renqhuist court is, some things in the law are crystal clear.

The ACLA is one of those groups that many people love to hate. Or hate to love. Or something like that. Anyway, I don't know anyone who is neutral about them; they either love them or hate them, depending upon the issue at hand.

This time, I will say they are on the right track. The Constitution gives every American the right to have their own opinion, whether that agrees with the government's opinion or not. Every American should have a copy of the Constitution in their house, just for reference; I know that I do.

Even though the government wants us to be safe, I agree that the Supreme Court will never let the Patriot Act stand as it currently is.

Wasn't the Patriot Act supposed to phase out over time? I think our equivalent does...

Is there any country in the west that doesn't have a Sept. 11 terrorist law?

The ACLU is one seriously huge dichotomy..some times they are right on the money, then they turn right around and shoot themselves right in the ass. I really think the leaders need to take some kind os schizophrenia medicine

I won a diet contest one time where this other guy and I were each supposed to lose 20lb, and the first one to reach there could tell the other where to send $100. He was going to make me send mine to the ACLU, but with that kind of motivation, I lost the twenty pounds in a little over two months. I took his check and subscribed him to the National Review for five years.

In the Patriot Act are citizens commanded to inform on their nieghbors? Or are citizens encouraged to report things they believe to be amiss? If reporting is wrong then what does that do to someone calling about a normal crime, like say child abuse, or a robbery in progress. I don't know but isn't imforming the police or FBI also protected by the consitution as a form of free speech? There must be other aspects of the Patriot Act inorder for the courts to even consider it.IMHO

reporting neighbours? "anti-american" material for having an antibush poster??? wow, that does sound like mccarthy at its best. see, that usually is the difference between the left and the right. you can make fun and critisice the left all you want and you are not going to go to jail (i bet you could have a derogatory poster of clinton and nothing would have happened). i guess its a matter of sense of humor... or taking the big stick out of your ass.

edit: hey, what happened to the post about bushes grades? i cant find it anywhere.
