I went to a annual festiable called the Scottish Games today, it was fun. It got me to thinking, I wonder who is here is really scottish, I know, most people in America have some forum of Celtic heritage in them.
Then I got to thinking, how much do they know about their anncestors, if they are scottish/irish. I kind of pride my self on knowing more then your average kid my age about my ancestors. My mother is scottish/wellish. Part of the Ritchie branch of the MacIntosh's. They came to America around the 1820's. They landed in Virgina, and then my great grandmothers parents moved west ward and setteled in Texas (WHY?!?!). So, yeah, thats the basics . I was just wondering, if you are in fact scottish or irish, do you know who clan you belong too? And just for the sake of asking, have any of you ever been to the Highland Games (Or Scottish Games as they are called here) I think they are biggest in Texas, Virgina and the Carolinas. So...yeah.. Well, that's an age old question. My mother's family name is Braybrooke, so it is Scottish (or at least close), but we really can't figure out which clan we belong to.

I'm Scottish, Irish and English descent. But 5 generations Australian on at least one side...
Scots are Celts Gabe. Originally the terms Scots and Irish referred to the same people. The Dalriad Scots from Northern Ireland conquered, dispossessed and assimilated the Picts that were living in what we call Scotland. The Picts were NOT Celtic. The Romans called the place Caledonia I believe and encountered the frightening naked, painted blue, Pict warriors (hence the name - from Picture) Later on the Angles from Denmark settled much of lowland Scotland, and the Hebrides and Coastal areas of Western Scotland and Eastern Ireland had sporadic Viking settlements (The Norse Vikings founded Dublin). All jumbled up in the wash are we Euro peeplz. [ 11-09-2002, 09:44 PM: Message edited by: Yorick ] |

My grandmother (mother's side) was from Scotland. She married an Irishman moved to Canada shortly after WW2. My family on my dad's side came to Canada very early, sometime in the mid-late 1700s. Not too sure about them, though.
