Lyrics of the musical are a little near the knuckle.

What does it mean? My dictionaries don't include it.

Must be a Britishism. We say "near to the bone," but that means the same thing as "cuts too deep," meaning too personal.

It's from my English book (Upper-Intermediate Student's Book, Oxford University Press).
The phrase is from an interview with Paul Nicholas, who played a part of Jesus in the first-ever production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Thanks.
