Its a Very sad story but I could really use some outside advice

It sounds like your friend is suffering from clinical depression...not just a temporary mood swing. In this case, your friend's best option is to seek professional counseling - someone who is specifically trained to help those who are suicidal. As a friend, the best thing you can do is follow Stormy's advice about gathering a support network to be with them fulltime. In the meantime, check into the counseling options available in your area.

Call a local counseling center, explain the situation, and ask them for their advice. Find out if a friend can bring the person in, or if it requires a family member. Then do what you can to get your friend there.

Anyone who is talking about suicide usually wants to be helped, but they can't see a reason for continuing the fight. That is where you will need the help of a trained professional.

If there is an emergency' such as they threathen to kill themselves here and now' you can call an ambulance to escort them to a hospital. There are competent personell there that know how to deal with situations like that.
