K T Ong... you do know that Yorick is an Aussie, don't you....?
Edit: but it's a good point you made. If Yorick says "it doesn't apply to all humanity", then neither does it to all Americans. [ 07-04-2002, 05:28 AM: Message edited by: Melusine ]

Glad you agree on a couple things I said, Melusine.

Don't mean to put you down -- and I certainly have nothing against a healthy bit of patriotism, either (or I wouldn't be seeing my love of Chinese culture as a good thing) -- but if it doesn't apply to all humanity, at the same time neither does it apply to all Americans, does it? Do you think all Americans are generous, that all Americans welcome the best, etc? I for one wouldn't imagine that all Chinese are good Confucians -- lovely fantasy though it might be. And don't mind if I ask: if this thread were instead to be about, say, the Chinese celebrating some major event in their country (say the reunification of Taiwan with China) and talking about their major achievements in history, would you be as ready to defend them and speak on their behalf? Would you?
KT, where does it say "All Americans are this"? It's generally referring to the collective whole. Where it speaks about an individual, it's still speaking about the country and not making a statement of falicy, that all Americans are thus. The only instance of that is "an American is generous", but then clarifies with a statement of the collective action, not the individuals. On religion alone, the world is far from being a place where you can worship as freely as in America. |

Besides the analogy is all wrong. Me being an Australian who loves Celtic or British culture is akin to a Singaporean loving Chinese culture. The ancestral homeland of origin. |

To Yorick:
All right, then, sorry if I've misread you. Let's forgive and forget everything then, okay?
