About changing classes: I believe my mother's family might count but I'm not sure about the exact family history.

Rikard, I may only be a fascist American to you, but I guess you and I must have different definitions of socialism. Here is the textbook definition, which doesn't apply to any country in the world that I know of. Russia was the only country that even attempted to emulate the true socialist model, and that rapidly led to communism. But hey... I guess that's better then fascism, right buddy?

Ludwig von Mises stated in 1922:

The essence of Socialism is this: All the means of production are in the exclusive control of the organized community. This and this alone is Socialism. All other definitions are misleading.

The dictionary:

A doctrine or movement calling for public ownership of factories and other means of production.

The only government that modeled this was the good old United Soviet Socialist Republic. None of the European countries are socialist governments as outlined by the creators of socialism.

I am ready to stand corrected by the way about the whole plane in china thing, but I haven't read any articles anywhere saying it was the US' fault.

You are proud of America being Capitist, that everybody has a change to be great if they are capible
automaticly the lesser capible cannot rise
And it's one step away from killing them because they are not needed
that's fasism for ya
I just read this and I can't believe you wrote this!! The less capable will not make it as high as the more capable, but just because they aren't CEO's of major corporations that doesn't mean they are not needed.

Do you really think that blue collar workers aren't needed? How would a country operate without truck drivers, farm workers and so on. You don't have these people in a "socialist" society? Yes you do have them. Are they not needed? Of course they are needed. You are the one that attached class importance to these jobs not me.

This is what I took from your last statement. You think that blue collar workers are not needed and since they are not needed they are as good as dead.

If your government asked you to be a truck driver would you have a more prestigeous job then ours do over here? Or did your government "kill" you by giving you an unnecessary job? Which one of us is the fascist again there ace?

Glad to hear it hasn't been ignored. The havoc is dying down right now, some people who stopped are even beginning to eat beef again. Of course, BSE has gotten buried a bit under Foot and Mouth so the news no longer states every single suspicious case. I believe the total number of BSE cases in Germany is reaching 100 (not sure, as I said it's no longer talked about as much)

The current people in power in America "do" believe that big business and the economy is more important than the individual. They would rather have a booming economy than a safe environment at work and at home. The welfare of the strong seems more important than that of the weak.

I think they would argue that, but I think you are correct. There is more emphasis on the economy now because of economic problems we have been having, and they think the best way to fix these problems lies in the corporation and the "trickle down" Reaganomics of the 80's.

Hey Kaz, I remember some pretty in-depth coverage of the ramifications of the hoof-and-mouth outbreak. It was a rather short-lived story in the US, maybe two weeks spotlight, but it seemed fairly intensive coverage while it was presented.
The BSE angle was mostly picked up by the science-related stations.
Truly frightening to see a disease cross species that way, makes you wonder what's next...
What have been the economic impacts to date? Is it pretty bad for the farmers and slaughterhouses involved?

Very. Basically, almost nobody eats beef nowadays. A couple of people even became complete vegetarians. As I said, the trend is slowly reversing. The farmers really have trouble - a friend of my mothers started a little farm with cows about 2 months before BSE became a big problem . As you might imagine, they are hanging on by the skin of their teeth. Foot and Mouth has not gone over to Germany yet, or if it has it's been covered up , I believe. The situation seems to be getting better, but there was complete panic for a while.

I heard quite a bit about both BSE and Hoof and Mouth disease. Of course I was in London for a while right in the middle of Hoof and Mouth, so when I returned to the States I was a little more aware and 'noticed' it more on news broadcasts! I think like any other 'international' story, the US media covered it for a while but then lost interest when something more appealing came along.

I hesitate to mention this but I think that the current administration in the USA is just trying to restore a balance between business and environment. We have a whole state with the inability to supply itself with power because they didn't go for a balanced approach and ignored the needs of PEOPLE vs the needs of a tree or an animal. Im not advocating clear cutting or strip mining..there is in my opinion a balanced middle ground. There are those people who think we should give up modern life and go back to nature...but technology and business has doubled our lifespan and has provided much more good than harm.... at least so far.

Forgot to mention that this is in response to Skywalker. I need to learn how to quote in this thing...any one want to educate me?
