They can't end it - there's no official schoolies per se, just a collective agreement between all school leavers that they'll go on holiday on the gold coast. The recent trend of calling it the 'schoolies festival' is a misnomer, as there's no festival as such, just necessary arrangements by police and the queensland government for safety and activities since the kids will all be there no matter what. They couldn't stop the students from going as that would mean banning hotels and units from accepting bookings from school leavers - blatant discrimination which would never hold up.

What I find really sad is all the older people who go down to join in - how sad would you have to be, 20-somethings tacking onto what is really a big graduation party

Actually, for my high school graduation, all I drank was DR Pepper, but that was a few years back. Perhaps all is now decadence...
