The storyline is good and is developed well throughout the game; but it is not as immersive as BG series. This game is about combat and character development --Lots and LOTS of combat and expo-- and is fairly linear: Few and short side quests, and the next step is always pretty obvious.

Better than BG2? Depends. If you like combat and tactics, then maybe IWD is better. If you like immersive non-linear play than my understanding is that BG series is better. IWD came out between BG and BGII, basically as a snack for BG enthusiasts who were rabidly awaiting the release of BG2. I have not played either of the BG games; but have heard that, technically and artistically, IWD/HoW is pretty much in the middle between these two.

Yes, you get 6 characters per party, but you get to roll all of them yourself (no NPCs join your party).

EDIT: Yes, lots of good spells, including the ones you mentioned.
