If you are talking about the book that you buy in the monastary, just put it in the quick item slot of the character you want to get the exp. Then use it like you would any other quickitem.

It won't let me... I put it in the quickitem slot, and then I look at the at the quick item, and it is grey...
Maybe it's just my game?

Hmm. It shouldn't be grayed out; the book works for anyone. Just put it on your belt, exit from the inventory screen, and then left-click on it.
