Think about it, the film was three hours long as it is!

They couldn't have put all the bits from the book in it even if they wanted to.

plus the film catered for a different audience. you couldn't keep all the long-drawn out songs and conversations in an action film

I didn't read it after because I've already read the trilogy two and a half times in the past LOL!!!

While many of us (including myself) would have gleefully sat for 6 hours if that's what it took to faithfully reproduce the book... most people would not. I think the director did a magnificent job of capturing the essence of FoTR in a 3 hour movie. That said... I'm REALLY looking forward to the 3.5 hour directors cut.

Oh, and Sam's pony actually had a medium-sized role in the book, but it was hardly even seen twice in the movie.
But they do have reason....if they included everything, the movie would be 6 hours long

Neb, I'll reserve the seat next to you for the 6 hour version. I would have loved Tom Bombadil and Bill (the pony, not me )
Kaltia, to answer your question, I first read it in 1965, probably before Lord Shield. I stopped counting the times I've read it at thirty. Times read, not age)
