As I'm playing a party of a certain alignment, thought I'd take Valen's Mistress up on her offer. I don't think I've turned her down yet, but I do know I've fought certain creatures of the night - but they haven't bothered me is some time. I go to the meeting place at night and no one is there. Is there a certain place in the District I have to look or have I simply cut off this avenue of adventure.

It has to be at night, which I'm sure you know already. Also you must have at least 15,000 in gold on you. Normally you meet her when you first walk into the graveyard, but if not then head east and up the stairs until you find her. She's around there....somewhere.

Also, your protagonist must not be a thief or a multiclass eligible for a thief stronghold. Thief = no Bodhi.

as far as i know the thief thing is untrue...i am a thief and i have been offered, and accepted to join bohdi's group....maybe my game is messed up tho...but as far as i know you CAN be a thief

You CAN be a Thief and work for Valen's mistress, you simply can't be a PURE Thief. So Multiclassed Thieves can, can Dual-classed Thieves can provided that their non-Thief half is active. This, at least, is what I've heard.
Timber_Loftis, it's more likely that you simply took too long. After Valen gives you her message, you can wait about 2 full nights to go to the Graveyard District. After 3 nights, they mark you down for a loser and do without you. Note: You can still postpone this. Valen speaks to you the first time you're in Athkatla and you have at least 20,000 gold. If you get her message and then go blow all your money, leaving you with less than 15,000, Valen's mistress will give you more time past the 2-night limit.
