The reason she had trouble breathing is called Pickwickian Syndrome. I am sure I won't have to explain why to you, Mel. The muscles get too weak to move the chest wall and diaphragm, CO2 builds up in the blood due to structural respiratory failure, and the patient collapses into CO2 narcosis and dies. We had one like that when I was a youngster. Had to have two hospital beds lashed together, and died when the nurse's aide forgot to raise the head of his bed when she was through changing the sheets.

the thing i dont get about fat people is how they let themselves get fat. i mean i know girls that are 20 lb. under weight and THEY think their fat. once u get over 200lb. ur fat and u need to lose weight now. and another thing i dont believe is the thing about depression that is just bull s***.
I know about low met. but most people can help being fat they just choose not to. I'm done. Sad though [ 08-14-2004, 06:32 PM: Message edited by: Tasslehoff Burrfoot ]

Depression, like Stormy, is something I have. It has this ability to radically change how you think and feel about things that you would probably think the exact opposite of in a very short amount of time. Among the worst things to happen is the severe lack of energy and will power to do anything. I'm not on medication for it, it's useless to me because I was born with it. I have my ways of fighting it and that's all that can be done. Think before you speak. |

No, not bi-polar Stormy, I'm usually an easy going person and it normally takes a lot for me to get angry, but there are some people like the above person that knows what buttons to push.
I don't take the medication because some of my relatives are already taking it and it really doesn't help them that much. Most of it is just experimental anyway, the doctor will say "Take this and see if it works" and they've been through so many prescriptions, they're still the same way they were five years ago, to me it's just a waste of money. I have my own way of fighting it, and it helps. |

No doubt there is an enabler involved in these types of situations. I've always thought when I hear about people getting so large they can no longer move or get up at all, that they have people feeding them then. There has to come a point, before they cannot move anymore, where you just say "No, I'm not going to get anything for you, I'm not going to cook for you, go do it yourself." And if I ever fed them it would not be 50 porkchops or something. No doubt the problem needs to be addressed way before anyone gets that large, but I suppose it can be hard on family members, especially if they are the children doing all the cooking and taking care of, etc. If there isn't already, I think there should be some kind of hotline that a person could call, wherein professionals could come in and help the person both pysically and mentally. Of course this would mean house calls, so not sure if that type of thing is available. It's really sad if you ask me, it's a shame they were not able to save her.
